Lakeside Lodge- Manor Course - 11/04/16

The Lodge Course was closed for maintenance this Monday so we went on the Manor Course. We haven't played it at all over the winter as it's been closed.

The 1st hole has been shortened and the men and women now play off the same tee, situated between two lakes about 110 yards from the pin. Previously the men played from further back and had to play across both lakes. My tee shot was length perfect but the right to left wind drifted it to the left of the green, where it plugged in very muddy ground. There followed a comedy of errors as I took three attempts to cover less than 15 yards and then two-putted for a poor gross 6 on what is a par 3.

A good drive with a slight draw set me up perfectly for the 2nd green, but we all played short under-estimating the strength of the wind in our faces. I then pitched past the green, played back on with the putter and two-putted for another 6, a nett bogey.

The 3rd is about 100 yards over a lake and my shot drifted a little right with the wind but was good for length. A 7-iron chip-and-run put me down for 2, a nett eagle and four points. Things were improving.

The par 5, 4th starts with an uphill drive and I only just reached the fairway with a 150 yard drive. Two sweet hybrids got me to the right of the green, where a 7-iron chip-and-run set me up for a gross par, but in the end I needed two putts for a gross 6. The par 3, 5th also went well. A driver off the tee got me to the front edge of the green, from where I putted on and then two-putted for a gross 4. After a poor start things were certainly looking up.

The 6th is a really challenging hole. A 560 yard par 5 that dog-legs to the left around a lake. Into the wind my drive only made 135 yards, the following hybrid setting me up to play down the hill from the dog-leg. Two more good hybrids gave me an 8-iron shot to the green, which slopes towards the approach, but unfortunately my shot rolled over the top edge. I chipped back on and single putted for a gross 7, which is more than acceptable for me on this hole.

Hole 6 - Manor Course - 11 April 2016

The 7th is uphill and a somewhat low drive rolled on to make 175 yards, from where I put a hybrid shot just in the trees to the left of the green. A good chip from there would have set me up for a par, but I fluffed it and needed a second attempt, then putting for a gross 5, nett par. Things were still going pretty well.

The 8th brought me back down to earth. My 5-wood off the tee topped the ball and it only went 50 yards. I then muffed a hybrid and put the subsequent 8-iron on the bank at the back of the green. A chip on and two putts gave me 6 on this par 3, halting what had been quite a good run.

If the 8th was a bit of a mess, the 9th was a complete disaster. I put the drive left towards out-of-bounds where a high net protects a property behind. Unfortunately the area around the net comprises long grass, and the net itself has holes, so we didn't know whether the ball had gone through or bounced off; we didn't find it. I took a two-point penalty for a lost ball and played an 8-iron out for 4. An attempt to play to the green with a hybrid wasn't successful and then I put an iron past the pin and off the green to the right. I putted on and then two-putted, but with the penalty it was a 9. A sad ending after what had been a very good sequences of holes from the 3rd onwards.
