Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 29/06/17

I thought today was going to be one when I finally managed to hold things together and get around 9 holes without mishap. I was wrong!

After rain yesterday it was overcast with a bit of wind but otherwise conditions were fine, except for water in some of the bunkers, which fortunately I avoided.

Three good hybrids on the par 5, 1st got me to the back of the green. The pin was at the front so I was left with a very long putt, which I got just right. A shortish putt then gave me a par, a nett birdie. An encouraging start.

The 2nd wasn't so good. My tee shot went left into the trees and I grounded the club on my chip out, leaving me too close to the trees for an attempt at the green. I pitched up a bit further and then played an 8-iron onto the green, with two putts for a nett bogey 6.

I was thin on my tee shot on the 3rd, but luck was with me and the ball missed the bunker and in fact went low and long off the back of the green. I pitched on and two-putted for a nett eagle 4 - this par 3 has been re-indexed and now gives me two shots!

After a reasonable tee shot on the 4th my second was longer than I expected and stopped very close to the lake. Rather than taking the 'money shot' over the lake, I chipped sideways back to the fairway. My pitching wedge shot then ran off the back of the green, needing a chip back on and two putts for a nett bogey 7.

I was a bit short with my tee shot on the par 3, 5th, but again avoided the two bunkers. A 7-iron chip-and-run left a gettable putt, which I managed having judged the curve of the green correctly. A par, nett birdie.

Hole 5 - 29 June 2017

On the 6th my tee shot didn't make good contact and went along the ground, stopping in the long grass at about 90 yards. The second was sweet, however, at 155 yards, leaving me an 8-iron pitch onto the green. Unfortunately I three-putted, the second putt not being difficult. Nett bogey 6.

The 7th is where things started to go wrong. I pulled my tee shot that then sailed gracefully into the lake left of the fairway. I dropped by the lake and, as if to compensate for going left previously, I pushed my next shot into the trees over to the right of the fairway. I played forward between the trees and then lofted a pitching wedge shot over trees ahead of me. Again with the pitching wedge I put the ball on the green and two-putted for a blobbed 8.

Once more I went left on the 8th, and again ended up in trees. I chipped out sideways but my next hybrid shot was heavy and only made 80 yards. The following one was better and left me with a fairly simple pitch to the green. But I looked up, shanking the ball right and short of the green. I chipped on with the next but when things start to go wrong I find it's difficult to break the pattern, as witnessed by taking four putts to finish with a emphatically blobbed 10!

On the 9th I went left yet again, the ball settling close to a tree, the only viable shot being a back-handed putter clearance. This left me with a bad lie near the path so I took my 8-iron, which cleared but only added 90 yards. My hybrid then went right, and the following attempt to loft a hybrid over the trees didn't come off. Now about 90 yards from the green I pitched up with my 9-iron. I was a bit short but could putt on and then single-putted for a blobbed 8.

So today my first six holes were fairly well controlled and I had collected 13 points at that stage. I only need 5 more from the final three holes to make handicap, but as you will have read these final holes were nothing short of a disaster. Tomorrow it's the Mad Cats' outing to Pavenham Park, so let's hope I can pull things back together for what I believe is a very good course. It would have been nice, however, to end today on a high as a confidence builder.
