Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 20/07/17
I had a few swings on the driving range yesterday and had brought my driver out of storage. Surprisingly it had performed well, so today I decided to give it a try. Just to reinforce the generally held view that what happens on the driving range doesn't necessarily translate to the course, I put my drive on the 1st into the left side trees. At least I didn't slice, which was what I used to do far too often with this club. I chipped out from the trees but my next couple of hybrids weren't that long, so I eventually chipped on for 5. Two putts would have rescued a point but it took me three, for an 8 and a blob.
I bravely took the driver again on the 2nd, risking the right side ditch. I needn't have worried, the ball careering into the large conifer on the left. We didn't see it drop but amazingly as we walked up the fairway we found the ball some 20 yards further on, it having gone through the conifer and come to rest back on the fairway. A bit of luck. My next hybrid was lacklustre again, needing a chip on, but then another three-putt finish left me with a nett bogey 6. Not a great start.
Back using the driver I managed to get on the fairway on the 4th, but the shot was nowhere near as long as I was getting on the driving range. My first hybrid put me behind the lake with a tree in front. I lofted over, again with a hybrid, but was a bit too far right and the ball ended up under a holly bush and was completely unplayable. A penalty drop for 4 and I pitched on for 5, needing two putts to finish with a nett bogey 7.
I was just short of the green on the 5th, playing against what was by now quite a strong wind. I chipped up and two-putted for a nett par 4.
The 6th went well. The drive stayed on the fairway and although my next hybrid shot was a bit thin, it was accurate and ran onto the green leaving me a gettable putt. I got it for a nett eagle 3.
The 7th and 8th usually offer me the chance to pick up points as they suit my long fairway shots, but today I seemed to have lost the ability to hit the ball cleanly. My drive on the 7th was long but went left, stopping a bit to close to the lake and in rough. I should have taken an iron but tried to use my hybrid, not getting behind the ball and only making just over 60 yards. I then did more or less the same thing with my next two hybrids even though I was now playing off the fairway. I finally pitched on for 5 and two-putted for a nett bogey 7.
I went left into the trees on the 8th, the ball actually reaching the far side and ending up on the approach to the 7th. The lie wasn't great so I decided not to go for broke with a direct shot over the lake, but chipped up with my 9-iron and then played over the lake with a hybrid. Yet again my next hybrid off the fairway was poor and I then pitched to just off the green for 5. I putted on but two more putts left me with a blobbed 8.
My drive on the 9th was again left and into rough. This time I played out with my 5-iron but didn't get the distance this club warranted. And once again the next hybrid was poor, leaving too much to do with the following shot, after which I pitched to the green for 5. Two putts rescued a point with a nett bogie 7.
Today was disappointing. After some consistent long drives on the range the day before, none of today's drives were that good, with a tendency to go left. I'm happy that there were no slices but I must try to sort out this problem. The most disappointing thing was my fairway hybrids. I can usually rely on my 20 degree club to get me anything between 140 and 170 yards, but today even the lower figure was a challenge, and in many cases I struggled to get half that because of poorly hit shots. The final tally was 54 shots, 18 putts and 13 points, although I seem to have made a bit of a mess of my scorecard and must confess to not being sure of my score for Hole 5. I've recorded a 4 here but it may have been a 3.
