Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 05/02/18
My hopes of improved iron shots after last Thursday's deliberations did not materialise. After a reasonable drive off the first tee I topped the 4-iron, sending the ball left and less than 20 yards. The next was better, and I was nearly on the green with my fourth shot. A chip on and two putts for a nett bogey 7. We were playing off mats again and on the 2nd I floored the driver, causing the ball to go right and run into the ditch, where it was lost. A penalty drop was followed by a poor 5-iron that left me well short. The pitching wedge got me on but three putts left me with a blobbed 7.
My driver shot on the short 3rd only avoided the 'seasonal' lake to the right because it bounced back off a tree. A low 7-iron got me on the green and two putts gave me a nett birdie 4. Having just avoided the bunker with my drive on the 4th my 6-iron was poor, leaving me on a raised bank. I took my 5-iron to go for the green, but again the shot wasn't clean, leaving me well short. Then I muffed the pitch, needing another to get on for 5. Two putts for a nett bogey 7.
I took my hybrid of the tee on the short 5th and then pitched on. Two putts for a nett par 4. A long drive on the 6th was followed by an 8-iron that took me pin high but off the left of the green. A gentle gap wedge overran more than I would have hoped, but I putted back and in for a par 4, nett birdie 3.
After a reasonable drive on the 7th and a 4-iron, I tried for the green with my 7-iron but was well short as the iron shot lofted more like a pitching wedge than a 7-iron. I pitched on and two-putted for a nett par 6. The 8th wasn't so good. After the drive my 4-iron took more ground than ball (trying too hard). The next was better but my 5-iron attempt to the green veered right, the ball stopping short of the bunker. I pitched over and two-putted for a nett bogey 7.
The 9th also suffered from a badly hit 4-iron after my drive. The next was better, but not great, while the following one was again more ground than ball. Now on 4, I tried for the green with my 4-iron. This time I hit it well, the ball stopping just before the green. Unfortunately my 7-iron chip was weak, leaving me with two putts for a blobbed 8. A bit of a sad finish.
The end result was a 54 with 18 putts and 13 points. Better than last time but still plenty of room for improvement. In mitigation, the ground was very soft and the spiked greens were still very unpredictable, so a result 5 over handicap is, I suppose, not too bad.
