Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 04/05/17

Today I nearly managed 9 holes without a disaster, but a couple of wayward shots on the 4th spoilt it. It was a bright but windy day and as has become the norm recently, we were following slow players. I'm not very good, but I sometimes think that some people aren't quite ready for the Lodge Course. Since they closed the Church Course, which was ideal for practice and saw a lot of my early golf, very few people seem to use the Manor Course and most appear on the Lodge. This is resulting in regular slow play.

Three good hybrids on the 1st got me to within 30 yards of the green, from where an accurate pitch left me with a par opportunity. It was a shortish putt that seemed dead on line, only to turn at the last moment. So it was a nett par 6 in the end. A safe tee shot on the 2nd and a second that kept out of trouble left me a pitch to the green and two putts for another nett par.

I tried a bit too hard on the 3rd tee and topped the ball, which ended up among trees about 60 yards forward to the left. From there I intended a lofted 8-iron to the green, but instead hit the ball along the ground. Amazingly it made the green and left me with two putts for a nett birdie 4 (I now get two shots on this hole after the stroke indices were changed).
Hole 6 - 04 May 2017
The 4th is where it all went wrong and not for the first time. The 5-wood tee shot was good but settled in the rough to the left. I then hit a hybrid too far right and the ball went over the far bank. A short safety chip got me back in play from where I tried to hit 130 yards to the green, but another wayward shot, possibly wind affected, turned right and went towards out of bounds. We couldn't find the ball so I took a two-point penalty for the lost ball and dropped. I needed another couple of shots to get to the green and then two putts for a 10!

A clean hybrid tee shot on the 5th went pin high off the left of the green. A short pitch and two putts for a nett par 4. The 6th was even better. The tee shot wasn't long and went left, but a cracking hybrid out of the short rough went nearly 170 yards settling just off the left of the green. An 8-iron chip and one putt for a nett birdie 4.

Two good hybrid shots on the 7th left me an 8-iron to the green for 3. It actually was just off the left of the green but a good chip and one putt gave me a nett birdie 5, my third nett birdie of the round.

On the 8th the two three balls in front, all young chaps, who had been holding us up, decided to let us through. So I teed off with six extra spectators, but fortunately hit a straight and long 5-wood. Two hybrid shots put me just off the left of the green, but I thinned the 8-iron sending the ball across and off the green. I putted back on and then single putted for a nett par 6. It could have been another nett birdie!

A bit of luck on the 9th saved the day. My hybrid tee shot reached the bunker from where I played a decent 9-iron out. The next hybrid shot was long and left me with what should have been a straight 8-iron to the green. Inexplicably I sent the ball left into trees. After unsuccessfully looking for the ball for a while, it was spotted across the fairway. It had ricocheted out from the trees. I pitched on and two-putted for a nett bogey 7.

The outcome was a round of 51 with 15 putts. I had 18 points thanks to my three birdies. If only I could have got a sensible score on the 4th this would have been my best 9 holes to date. Still, overall I was happy with my play, the good shots today far outweighing the bad.
