Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 03/10/16

A new strategy today after the problems I had off the tee on Thursday. I decided to tee off with my 20 degree hybrid. Because of a misunderstanding over our tee time I had a chance to go on the range with 40 balls and the hybrid was working fine, as were my irons after a bit of adjustment to set up.

The usual desire to avoid the ditch on the right caused me to go left on the 1st, ending up just over the path on the edge of the trees. I didn't make good contact with the ball but was back on the fairway. A long 5-wood (178 yards) set me up for an 8-iron pitch to the green. This left me a long putt and in fact I needed three to get down, my only three-putt of the day. So it was a 7 for a nett bogey.

The hybrid didn't work on the 2nd, my first shot going out of bounds to the right. The second stayed on the fairway and a good 27 degree hybrid put me at the back fringe of the green. Two putts for a nett bogey, which wasn't bad after three off the tee.

The hybrid went right again on the 3rd, leaving me with an awkward shot that needed to keep low under tree branches. I overdid it a bit and needed to chip back on from the far side of the green, two putts making it a nett bogey 5.

The 4th wasn't its usual nightmarish self. The hybrid tee shot was short and a bit right, followed by a 5-wood that wasn't spectacular but got me in range of the green. I was, however, short with the next hybrid and chipped up with my gap wedge, which was also short. A 7-iron and a putt gave me a 6 for a nett par. Scrappy but an acceptable result.

I took a chance with the 5-wood off the tee on the 5th, as I doubted I would make the green with a hybrid. The wood sliced and the ball ended up on the right hand bank. It was an awkward pitch but the pitching wedge behaved itself, although my first putt was from off the green. The second putt went in for a nett bogey 5.

I always go left on the 6th for some unknown reason, and using the hybrid off the tee didn't alter this. I fluffed the next shot, knocking it only about ten yards but the following attempt was better, leaving me a gentle 8-iron chip onto the green. Two putts for a nett bogey 6.

The hybrid behaved itself on the 7th, but I then hit two poor 5-woods, repeating Thursday's mistakes on this hole. My next 8 iron was good for length but to the right of the green, the pin being far left. My 7-iron chip was short, leaving me far too much to do with the putter, a second putt necessary for a nett bogey 7.

The 8th was fairly tidy, although I took a hybrid to play to the green from about 140 yards and the ball was in a shallow divot hole. I should have gone with an iron as the hybrid shot didn't pick up the ball and was short. The next shot was with a 9-iron but the ball crept off the green, requiring a 7-iron chip and one putt for a nett par 6.

And so to the 9th. I didn't connect cleanly with the hybrid off the tee and it only went just over 100 yards. From there a long 5-wood got me well forward, but unfortunately it went left behind trees. A lovely lofted 8-iron cleared the trees and left me ideally placed in the centre of the fairway. My hybrid approach shot was just shy of the green from where I putted on but left myself a long putt to finish. I actually needed two for a nett bogey 7.

Holes 1 and 9 - 03 October 2016

It certainly didn't feel as bad as last Thursday and although I still didn't hit many fairways, I wasn't quite as wayward, and recovery was less of an issue. Perhaps next time I'll drop to the 23 degree hybrid off the tee. The shots will be shorter but perhaps more consistently straight.

Today it was a 54 and 15 putts, with 12 points and NO blobs! Hardly earth shattering but it felt less disastrous.
