Lakeside Lodge - Lodge Course - 14/11/16

Although my total score today was certainly not as bad as in some recent rounds, I didn't feel that it was a performance to feel good about.

We started in rain, causing me to dispense with my usual practice swings and warm up. The result, I miss-hit the ball off the 1st tee, it coming to rest only 36 yards away. The next couple of shots weren't that brilliant either, but the 4th got me to within a pitch to the green, which I put to the left. A chip back on and two putts left me with a nett double bogey 8.

The hybrid tee shot on the 2nd made 150 yards despite clipping trees on the left. The next hybrid put me on the green and I should have parred the hole, but missed a shortish putt for a nett par 5.

My tee shot on the 3rd went right but not seriously so. I had to take a free drop from a hole that was clearly dug by an animal. I chipped on but was short. I nearly made the long putt but needed a tap-in for a nett par 4.

I came down on top of the ball on the 4th tee, the ball only going 60 yards. I then muffed the next shot for another measly 25 yards, and the next wasn't great either. I was now where I should have been with my tee shot, but on 3. Two reasonable hybrids recovered the situation somewhat, the second putting me just off the back of the green. A chip on and two putts left me with a nett double bogey 8, and a blob. Given the poor start to the hole this wasn't actually that bad.

A freshening cross-wind drifted my tee shot on the 5th into the bunker. I tried picking the ball out with my gap wedge, which I did, but only to send it off the back of the green, just avoiding out-of-bounds. My 7-iron chip caught ground and was well short, needing two putts to finish with a nett bogey 5.

The 6th went well. The tee shot wasn't actually that long but the second got me to within 80 yards of the green, and although my 8-iron pitch was thinned, it went along the ground and came to rest on the back of the green. A long putt went in, rescuing a par 4, and a nett birdie, from an inauspicious approach.

The 7th was also reasonably good. The tee shot went right but not so far as to restrict my second, which did a left to right curve around the trees, leaving me about 140 yards from the green. My hybrid shot was a bit right and would probably have made the green if it had been straight. I chipped on from the side of the green and single-putted for a nett birdie 5.

The 8th wasn't so good. I went left off the tee and had to play out sideways from trees. Two good hybrids then put me about 30 yards from the green but I muffed the iron shot, ending up on the edge of the green. I needed two putts for a nett bogey 7.

So could I pull things back a bit on the 9th. It's not an easy hole and my tee shot was short. The next wasn't that long either and went right into rough. I didn't get a clean shot out of the rough but the following hybrid put me within a 50 yard pitch to the green. Unfortunately my first attempt dug in and I needed another shot to get me on the green. I was now on 6 and needed a single longish putt to rescue a point, which I got. It's always good to finish putting in a long putt!

The outcome was 53 shots, 15 putts and 14 points. About average for my game at the moment. I still suffered because of poor tee shots and bad irons. Until I sort out these particular problems I doubt I'm going to improve my score.
